Barcelona

So the story goes. The only thing worse than my predictions in the previous post was the play of Manchester United. Anderson? Really Sir Alex? Of all the Fletchers' and the Scholes' you had to pick Anderson to start in the midfield. As for the battles, only today did Pep prove his true worth, Messi will now easily claim the European and World Footballer of the year awards and Spanish clubs now hold more Euro club titles than any other nation. Theres really not much else to say. Two-thirds of the Treble came easily for the Catalans but this CL title shows the world that they are the best team in the history of this sport. May I remind you that a few weeks ago after 93 minutes at Stamford Bridge Barcelona was down 1-0 and for that reason, among others, they proved to the world to be the top club team in footballing history. I will say that terrible goalkeeping and poor defending definitely played a role no smaller than that of Messi's tremendous header, but in the end of the day this win was nothing less than deserved.

Till next year (in the CL, anyway)

CL Final Preview

Phewwwph. Less than 24 hours before kick off and I can already feel the blood in my veins pumping. Tomorrow is the biggest day of this year in Soccer. Bigger than Newcastle's terrible loss to Villa on Sunday that relegated them for the first time in 21 years. Bigger than Barcelona's last game in the Champions in which they sent Chelsea crying in the final ticks in London. Tomorrow's match in Rome will not only decide the European club champion for the 08/09 season, it will most likely reveal the best club team that has ever played. Ever. It is an epic match that will be remembered in history as the face off between the two current top teams in the world and quite possibly the best teams of all time. The Stadio Olimpico will have a pulse never before witnessed in any match of any importance and one mistake on the pitch can prove fatal for either side. There is no doubt in my mind that Barca is the better of the two teams, however, Manchester will be victorious. Discipline, experience, and coaching. Not to mention the injuries and men who will be missed on yellows and red that Barca face. Tomorrow is more than just a duel between England and Spain, Ronaldo and Messi, and SAF and Pep. Tomorrow, the world will celebrate the crowning of the world's best ever club team.

Predictions are useless because its going to be such an unpredictable game, but for the sake of enjoyment and my sheer lust to say "Told ya so" here goes nothing: ManU 2-1 Barca, (Rooney 18) (Messi 34) (Ronaldo 76)...

Enjoy the game,

Crowned Champions

Nothing surprising. Manchester, Internazionale, Barcelona. The three biggest champions in the three biggest leagues in the world. Jose Mourinho didn't disappoint completely, he won the league but Inter bowed out a bit prematurely in the Champions League. As for the other two, flawless. Mostly. Why SAF didnt play his strongest side in the PK loss to Everton in the FA Cup semifinal is beyond me considering that had he won that match, his side would be on the path to an unheard of quadruple. Quadruple? Seriously? Yes. And they could have done it, but this year, a triple will suffice. Manchester United will be crowned Champions of Europe on May 27. Period. They are going to beat Barcelona (who are also shooting for the Spanish/Euro "Treble") simply because they have a better coach and more experienced players. Only last year was this same Manchester team in the final of this prestigious tourney and they won it. Pep deserves a lot of respect for what he has done thus far but he will fall just short of the highly regarded cup, as well as the Treble. Maybe next year, who knows, Gai Assulin is destined to debut for Barca sometime and the kid who is regarded to be the next Messi might just be enough for the Catalonian side to live up to their English rivals.

'till next time,

Essien Giveth, Essien Taketh Away

Wow. Unbelievable. Incredible. Heart-breaking. Well, you get the point, but the fact of the matter is, after all is said and done, the two best teams in the world are in the Champions League Final in Rome. Guus Hiddink is still the best manager in the world, and Barcelona is the classiest team. Gerard Pique admitted that the ball touched his arm, classy. Pep Guardiola said that Chelsea have every right to be mad at the situation, classy. Michael Ballack was in fact about to hurt the referee, who is officially entering the witnes protection program tomorrow. In the end of the day, Michael Essien giveth just as Michael Essien taketh away. Just as in the case of Michael Silvestre in the first leg against ManU, a poor clearing effort in the box will always, ALWAYS, come to bite you in the ass. Chelsea were denied 4 penalties, but so what? Shit happens and so do shitty referees. It was quite funny, how only when Barca went down to 10 men (im still convinced Anelka tripped himself) the game was even. 11 on 10 and only then the possession evened out. As for Barcelona, Andres Iniesta's strike was purely brilliant, but in all honesty I dont see them winning missing both their left and right backs, especially considering Manchester's greatest players are on the flanks. I am very excited to see this great battle between the two greatest teams on the planet.

EPL Review, CL Preview

Well, as for the scores I predicted for this weekend, I was mostly right about the winners but it seems that I'm not the best score guesser. 8/10 on the winners isn't totally bad but next time I'll have to be more conservative with my 3-2 guesses and stick to lower scoring 1-0's. Nothing too surprising, Yossi Benayoun scored again but thats becoming a weekly event. Liverpool need help from City next week to have any hope of taking the League this year, but who knows, maybe a little Manchester upset. Personally, I'm very excited for tomorrow's match. I have high hopes that its going to be an attacking free flowing match, but so far everything that I've wished for has not exactly happened. Arsenal need a goal (obviously) after going down 1-0 in the first leg, but they do have the Emirates advantage. The 60,000+ fans that will surely be there will be the 12th man. Although they are the weaker team, nobody can immediately rule them out. Manchester needs to play their game and if Dimitar Berbatov doesn't start, I will personally (attempt to) hurt Sir Alex. He is clearly one of their best players and should not be left to rot on the bench. Rooney has been looking fantastic on the left wing and I don't think there is reason to move him. ManU should start with this 4-4-2: Van Der Sar, O'Shea, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra- CRon, Carrick, Scholes, Rooney- Tevez, Berbatov. This is an attacking lineup and it allows them to attack from both flanks where they are clearly strongest. Arsenal have an inexperienced full back in Gibbs who is filling in for Gael Clichy, this presents an opportunity for either CRon or Rooney to run at him full on. By playing two more defense minded midfielders centrally, SAF would not be giving up on his defense entirely (like they need the help, Vidic and Ferdinand have it covered). As for Arsenal, they must attack. I'm not expecting too many changes from the lineup that appeared at Old Trafford but they need to change their playing style. They need more direct attacks and they need to get Walcott to move more in the center. Aight folks, I'm a tired one so I'm peacin' it.

EPL Gameweek 35 predictions

Saturday, 2 May 2009

Chelsea v Fulham, 15:00: Best game of the week, a terrific London derby as Fulham's been excellent against the big guns. 2-1 Chelsea.

Man City v Blackburn, 15:00: BBurn are still in the relegation battle technically so this is a very important game. They beat a good defending side in Wigan last week but then again City held off Everton 2-1. Man City 2-0.

Middlesbrough v Man Utd, 12:45: First against second to last, although its at The Riverside, ManU should not have any trouble. 3-0 ManU.

Portsmouth v Arsenal, 15:00: A difficult game for Arsene's men at Fratton Park because Pompey need all 3 points but they should take the win. 2-1 Arsenal.

Stoke v West Ham, 15:00: Stoke dont attack, they throw in. I love the Hammer's playing style but it'll be tough at the Britannia. 1-1.

Tottenham v West Brom, 15:00: After an exciting 5-2 loss to ManU in the last gameweek, Totteenham host WB. Hopefully we'll see the first-half-against-ManU Tottenham side which should produce a victory. 2-0 Tottenham.

Wigan v Bolton, 15:00: Wigan host a scrappy Bolton side coached by Gary Megson. This game has the potential to be a goal to goal thriller. 3-1 Wigan.

Sunday, 3 May 2009

Liverpool v Newcastle, 13:30: Newcastle travel to Anfield and hope to keep their Premier League status. They will need the 3 points and no less but it wont happen because Liverpool are much stronger and need to keep up with Manchester in the title race. 2-0 Liverpool.

Sunderland v Everton, 16:00: Everton should be able to hold off 35 point Sunderland but its difficult to rule them out immediately at home. 2-1 Everton.

Monday, 4 May 2009

Aston Villa v Hull, 20:00: Villa host Hull in the final game this week. Should be an exciting game with lots of action on both ends. Geovani for Hull and Agbonlahor for Villa should be any fans' centers of attention. 3-2 Villa.

Machester United V Arsenal Review (first leg)

About the most interesting thing to happen during today's match between the Red Devils and the Gunners was the fact that Ryan Giggs came on in the second half and made his 800th career appearance for SAF's side. Without a doubt the game was a huge disappointment yet both managers should be pleased with the 1-0 ManU victory. Although I full well almost fell asleep during the second half of this one, a few positive things did shine through. Hopefully soon to be naturalized British citizen Manuel Almunia was my (and many others' I presume) man of the match. If any of the other 3 keepers left in the CL, on their current form, had been standing in the Arsenal goal today, the Manchester scored would have tripled at least. This game was such a disappointment that I cannot even speak highly of the single goal that was scored. A weak effort at clearing the ball in the six yard area will always hurt you one way or another and in all truth and honesty it was God's way of making up for Carlitos' missed effort seconds before which led to the corner and subsequently the goal. Other than that, there really weren't too many bright spots. I can go on forever writing about everything that went wrong with today's game but for the sake of your precious time and boredom I will only touch on a few issues I feel are the most important. If Arsenal want to become a side which can win not only in the Premier League but also in European competition then they need to start acquiring proven players. I completely understand that Wenger's style includes the players' upbringing and youth coaching but in every case but one (today at least), the system has failed. The one bright spot today on the field was Samir Nasri. In my opinion he was the best player on the field other than his goalkeeper and maybe Wayne Rooney. The kid is a central midfielder with excellent ball control and the ability to go up and defend, but still needs to improve his weaker left foot. My complains to Wenger start with Theo. Completely unheard of today, unable to use his speed against a half decent defender in Evra, Theo Walcott needs to go on loan to a team like Everton or Villa where they play a strictly English style, straightforward, clean cut, with over the top long balls which he can latch on with his speed. Only on a team like that can he be the star and score goals. End of story. When he plays on such an international team like Arsenal where he is THE ONLY Englishman he looks lost. For whatever reason Arsene stuck him on the wing and restricted him from cutting inside where I believe his speed and cracker of a shot can be lethal. Another player who I was unable to comprehend neither his playing style nor the fact that he was actually on the pitch was Alexandre Song. Playing such an important position, in such an important game should not be left to someone with his lack of experience and awful touch. Barca has Yaya, Chelsea has Essien, Liverpool has Mascherano, is it really that hard to find a good defensive midfielder out there? Forget the market, Arsene has one on his bench. Why not Denilson? He's been holding up the defensive midfield role week in and week out in the Premier League and has been doing a damn fine job! And to go along with that you put alongside him poor Abou Diaby who cannot play for his life. Overall I think Wenger's style is appropriate for more experienced, older players because the young-ins don't understand. Arsenal attempts to play a style in which they try to conquer one area of 5 yard grass at a time and eventually hope to get a goal but against better teams this tactic doesn't work. They seem to want to give that extra pass over and over until they finally end up losing the ball. Attack the goal! Don't be scared! Especially on counter attacks, DO NOT step on the ball and wait for support, you only give more time for the defense to reset. Attack the defenders one on one, mano y mano, what's left to lose? Don't get me wrong, Arsenal have an excellent core of players like Fabregas, Adebayor, Van Persie and Arshavin but i believe if they want to win on a more consistent basis, and in European competitions they need their supporting cast to be more seasoned veterans. Manchester United today on the other hand did the bare minimum to get by. Yes, Sir Alex is rightly pleased with a small 1-0 victory but he should not be too excited about his teams playing style. Although they undoubtedly controlled the game, the team didn't look as sharp as they normally do. CRon was frustrated, their midfield was lax, and Ferdinand and Vidic didn't have much to do at all. When Giggs came on he brought a little bit of life that was missing but it wasn't enough. He was offside, it was an excellent call, which reminds me to commend today's referee crew who did a fantastic job, especially the Danish CR, Claus Bo Larsen, who did not bite at Ronaldo's weak dives. The best non-goal effort clearly belonged to the Devils' #7 who hit the crossbar with the type of shot that will be attributed to him for many years to come, but the problem with the effort is that it did not come from an organized attack but from a broken defensive mistake. Manchester cant rely on mistakes like that for too many goals although Almunia was beat and the ball sure dipped a lot. Other than that, not much to say. Quite a boring game (2nd half more so than the 1st) and I really hope that the return leg in London will bring much more excitement than this one did.
